Question (28 Ramadhan 1425/Nov 11, 2004)

Bismillah. As salaamu alaikum.

I am aware that the best manner is to take from a teacher! Knowledge in taking from the breast of men! However, I would like to know if you could delineate all the rules of Warsh Recitation alone and not in comparison to any other riwayat. Or can you direct me to a proper written source.

Thank you for your time in this matter. ma'a salaama.

Question (17 Ramadhan 1425/Oct. 31, 2004)

Assalamu Aleikum

In the recitation of Hafs by the way of Ash Shatibbiyyah, the lengthening is either 4 or 5 count (not including the natural mudood which is 2 count). I would like to know whether in the recitation of Hafs, but not by the way of Ash shatibbiyyah, one can lengthen to 2 count the alif such as in surat 59 verse 20: "...humul fâ izoon."
Have a blessed month of Ramadan and may Allah double your reward and may He make us remember Him constantly inshallah.
Ma'a Salam

Assalaamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

Alhamdulillah I have started a course in tajweed 3 weeks ago at my university. I was wondering if you could point out a few publications that may help me inshaallah as I have lessons once a week and often forget basic principles even though I write things down.
Jaza khallah khairun.

Question (10 Ramadhan 1425/Oct. 24, 2004)

Assalamu'alaykum,

Kaifa haalu ramadhaanakum?

Every Ramadhan I'm saddened at the rate of recitation of Quran of some aimmah who lead the taraweeh prayer in many masajids.

They usually lead Maghrib, Fajr or Isha' at normal speed, but when it comes to taraweeh the speed increases and most of the time many ahkaam of tajweed are severely compromised. I begin to wonder, how can all the characteristics of the Arabic letters (shiddah, rakhawah, hams etc) be preserved if Al Qur'an is read so fast? and how can one distinguish the levels of ghunnah that have been mentioned in the tajweed titbit lessons if one reads/recites al Qur'an so fast?

My question is, is there  maximum speed that we can be on when reciting al-Qur'an so that all the ahkaam of tajweed is preserved? Undoubtedly, there are shuyukh out there whose speed does not increase dramatically when leading the taraweeh but they leave satisfaction in the hearts of the ma'moom as the Qur'an is being read with tarteel hence producing khushoo'.

Jazakumullahu khaira

Question (3 Ramadhan 1425/Oct. 17, 2004)

Assalamu Aleikum

In the answer#011201, you wrote that "...we always have to make sure we are not "singing" the Qur'an." You also mentioned that proper Arabic intonation should be used and not the fabricated one similar to music. My questions are:

1)What does it mean when you say "singing" the Qur'an? Is it the "singing" we hear today (on the radio for example) or another type of singing?

2) When you say proper Arabic intonation do you mean reciting the Qur'an by respecting the rules of Tajweed such as stops, punctuation according to the way the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to read?

May Allah help you find an answer inshallah

Ma'a Salam
