Assalaam alaikum. I have a question concerning tajweed. What I need to know is that if in fact tajweed is FARDH.  I mean is it really mandatory?  I know many alim in Pakistan who do not read with tajweed and have the Qur’an hifz. I bet there are millions of people around the world who do not know how to read the Qur’an with tajweed. Please respond to me stating whether or not tajweed is mandatory or not and why. Thank you.

Question (19 Shawwaal 1422/ Jan. 3, 2002)

Could you please explain a sign that appears in the Qur'an in surah Yusuf; I cannot find an explanation for it in the Qur'an when I look at the explanation for the different stops etc...It is a small diamond shape above the meem in the 6th or 7th word in this aayah from surah Yusuf.

The translation of the meaning being: ((They said: "O our father! Why do you not trust us with Yűsuf (Joseph), - when we are indeed to him sincere counselors?"))

May Allah reward you.

Question  (17 Shawwaal 1422/ Jan. 1, 2002)

Is it right that some of the letters in Arabic that are pronounced with the tip of the tongue use a "thin long area" in the middle of the tongue rather than the whole width of the tongue to say the letter; for example in the letter siin
( ) or dhal ( ) or tha ( ) it seems that if "a lot" of tongue is used the sound is not sharp and clear.  Could you please clarify this for us?  Jazakumullahu khairan.

Question (12 Shawwaal 1422/ Dec. 27, 2001)

Alhamdulillah for your site and shokran and may Allah reward you for your help with our tajweed questions!  In listening to a recitation of the Qur'an it is noticeable that a certain word(altaqataa) in surah Aali 'Imraan in ayah 13 that is normally pronounced with a ta' with a shaddah on it (due to the assimilation of the lam before it) is not pronounced this way!  In fact when I looked at the Qur’an I saw that the ta’ in fact does not have a shaddah; could you please explain the reason for this.

Question (5 Shawwaal 1422/ Dec. 19, 2001)

This is a question relating to a small meem present at the end of some of the small surahs at the end of the Qur'an (for example:  surah Al-Ikhlas  and  Al-Nasr )  The small meem you have explained some time before (Oct. 20th) means a stop but why would it be at the end of these few surahs? and not at the end of others?

Question (2 Shawwaal 1422/ Dec. 17, 2001)

May Allah reward you for your answer to my previous question on stopping and starting.  I have another question regarding stopping and starting.  In ayah 51 of surah AZ-Zukhruf
if I stopped on "  "  could that be considered a "Kaafi" stop and the start after it a "kaafi" beginning because although they are linked in meaning they are not linked in grammar? and is the marked stop following it that is at "  " also a "kaafi" stop?
