Question (13 Rajab 1422/ Sept. 30, 2001)

Do the marked ends of the ajza’ (30 parts) necessarily mean that it is a good place to stop the reading (or to start the reading after it) because it is the end of a subject and the beginning of another and is not linked in grammar?

Answer

Question (12 Rajab 1422/ Sept. 29, 2001)

May Allah reward you continuously and grant the students of tajweed correct recitation of the Qur'an and understanding of it's verses and putting in practice of it's teachings.  Could you please tell me if the choosing of either 2 or 4 or 6 in stopping on a word (which has a medd due to the dropping of a vowel on the end of the word) is connected to the speed of reading?

2. It is difficult to keep the tongue from touching the roof of the mouth in the front behind the teeth when trying to say - so it does not sound right even if we are touching the right place at the molars.  Would you have any suggestion as to how to prevent that from happening?

Question (10 Rajab 1422/ Sept. 27, 2001)

I have a question about attributes of letters. The following letters fall in mehmusa (weak) category: Fa, Thaa’, Ha, Sheen, Kha, Saad, Seen, Kaaf, and Ta’. If the general idea behind this is that these letters are pronounced without force, then what about other letters such as Ba or Daal? When I hear a Qari, I don't detect extra softness or force when they pronounce Ba or Daal compared to other mehmusa letters (?). I am similarly confused about other categories such as Shadeeda, Musta-alia etc. I am missing this by a mile. Please guide me. May Allah reward you for your excellent efforts in teaching us.

Question (10 Rajab 1422/ Sept. 27, 2001)

I have a question about your archived tidbit lesson on lengthenings (part 1). There is mention of the “leen” letters - Are they part of the medd letters and their lengthening is 2 counts? I don't notice them given as examples at the bottom in the explanation for the natural lengthening.

Question (8 Rajab 1422/ Sept. 25, 2001)

In surah al-Baqarah, in ayah 178 there is a spelling I have a question about.  Here is the ayah:

The word " " has no dots on the ya'  nor does it have a small vertical alif like the word " " on the following line or like the word " " on the last line.   Are we to read it as a   or as an elongation of the fat-hah before it?

Question (6 Rajab 1422/ Sept. 23, 2001)

I had seen the phrase “weak letters” for “huroof al-‘eillah,” referring to the letters alif, wow, and ya’, and I commonly use that phrase. What do you think of that phrase?

Question (6 Rajab 1422/ Sept. 23, 2001)

Jazaakumu Allahu khair for your site.  I have a question about listening to recordings of the recitation along with my reading to check my tajweed.  I find that sometimes the lengthenings are different lengths than what I have learned;  it seems that some of the 4 or 5 count lengthenings (medds) are made about 2 counts.  Could you please explain this difference?  Assalaamu alaikum.

Question (4 Rajab 1422/ Sept. 21, 2001)

Today’s query is about the term “medd letters” you often use in your scripts. I have come to conclude that the term refers to the letters alif, ya, and wow. However, I have not found “medd” in my dictionary (a Merriam-Webster’s unabridged dictionary). Is it an abbreviation or a foreign word?

Question (3 Rajab 1422/ Sept. 20, 2001)

It has been my habit for many years to stop in the "middle" of the last ayah of surah al-Faatihah i.e. after the words - " " - and then reading on with what follows after that without going back.  There is no marked stop there so is my stop wrong?  Thank you and may Allah reward you.

Question (1 Rajab 1422/ Sept. 18, 2001)

There was a question dated  15th Jamad Ath-Thanee/Sept. 3rd in which you explain about the word " ".  I noticed another word in surah Al-Insaan ayah 4, the word " " that looks similar to " " in that it also has a small circle over the alif.  Does it follow the same rule as the word " " then?

Answer

Question (28 Jamad Ath-Thanee 1422/ Sept. 16, 2001)

1)     I need an exhaustive list of the uses of hamzah in both cases (wasli and qat'ia), as well as other cases, if there are any more. For example, cases of hamzatul wasli include the article “al” and the beginning of imperative verbs. Are there others cases in this category?

2)     I sometimes see hamzatul qat'i alone, without any letter, even in the middle of a word, as in "al-qur'an." Are such cases common? Is it possible to have an exhaustive list here too?

3)     When hamzatul qat'i is written on top of a small stick as in "bi'run" (a well), does it mean that the hamzah is on the letter ya’? If yes, then why are not there the two dots of the ya?

Question (15 Jamad Ath-Thanee 1422/ Sept. 3, 2001)

Assalamu alaykum and thank you for your help. The reading sign shows that the word for "I" in the Qur'an,  should be read "ana." One grammar book of mine also reinforces this point. However, several other books—including dictionaries--transliterate the word as "anaa." Meanwhile, virtually all native speakers I met say "anaa." I would highly appreciate your input on that matter.

Question (13 Jamad Ath-Thanee 1422/ Sept. 1, 2001)

In your present tidbit lesson about ghunnah you explain about the necessity of observing heaviness and lightness of the letter that follows the ghunnah.  Let's say that a tanween with a fat-ha comes on a ra’
( ) and is followed by a letter of lightness - for example in ayah 6 of surah At-Tahreem appears these words:    Wouldn't we say the letter  with a fat-ha and with heaviness and therefore the accompanying ghunnah would have heaviness?
