Was sheikh Mohamed Sideeq Manshawi a student of sheikh Mahmood Husary?  jazakumulaahu kheir

Answer

Question (27 Rabee' Al-Awwal 1425/May 16, 2004)

Assalamu Aleikum wa rahmatu lilahi wa barakatu

I have a question concerning the Mudood (lengthening). I have noticed that in the recitation of Hafs an Aasim some sheikhs that I listen to do not equally lengthen the vowels, and I know there may be an explanation for their doing so. For example when I listen to sheikh Abdel Basit (slow or fast recitation) reciting surat Al Insan verse 4: "Innaa a'tad naa...." he will for instance lenghten to 4 counts the "aa" in "innaa" (the "aa" has the medd symbol). However, when I listen to sheikh Mustafâ Ismâ'îl, or both sheikh Shuraim and Sudais (Taraweeh recordings) reciting the same verse, they will lengthen the "aa" in "innaa" to 2 counts only despite the medd sign above the "aa". They do so throughout the recitation. But I have also notice that they (isma'il, sudais and shuraim) will lenghten to 4 counts (4 as an example, for it could be 6) and never less than that letters such as: "aa" in "samaa" and "maa" (verse 32 in surat Ibrahim) or "shiin" in " ya shaa" in verse 30 of surat Al Insan. In other words, whenever there is the medd sign they will either lengthen the vowels to 2 counts and some to 4 or 6 while Abdel Basit lengthen those vowels equally.

My question is: Are they (the sheikhs mentioned in my questions) reciting in Hafs an Aasim but by another way?

May Allah help you find an answer inshallah. And I hope I did not write too much.  Wa Salamu Aleikum

Assalamu Aleikum

I have noticed that you often mention the recitation of Hafs an Aasim by the way of Ash Shaatibiyyah in some of the answers you give. Does this imply that in addition of the way of Ash Shaatibiyyah there is another way? If yes:
1. What is its name?
2. How is that way different of Ash Shaatibiyyah?
3. Does this way use the same rules of recitation as the Ash Shaatibiyyah way?

May Allah reward you for the countless services you put every day inshallah

Assalamu'alaykum,
I was asked, what's the difference between tarteel and tajweed? I know that the word 'tarteel has been used in Al Quran, but the word tajweed, IMHO, is nowhere to be found. Can you throw some light into this?

Question (14 Rabee' Al-Awwal 1425/May 3, 2004)

Assalamu Aleikum

I have a question regarding "joining a word with another" without saying the Bismillah.
In Surat Al Qamar verse 55, there is a small letter miim underneath the letter ra'. I know that the small miim indicates that the next letter will be the letter "ba". Therefore when continuing reading, the letter "ba" (for Bismillah on the next line) should be read with the ghunna sound. My question is: What is the rules of Hafs by the way of Ash Shatibiyyah if one would like to join (meaning read) the last verse of surat Al Qamar with the first verse of
surat Ar Rahman without saying the bismillah? Should the little miim be still applied?
May Allah reward you for the advice you wrote concerning surat Al Insan.

Question (14 Rabee' Al-Awwal 1425/May 3, 2004)

Assalamu Aleikum wa rahmatu lillahi

1. I have notice in surat Al Imraan verse 194: "...wa 'ad ttanâ.. ." the letter "dal" is followed by the letter "ta" with a shadda. However, the letter dal has no sign (such as a fatah, kasra, or dhamma). The same situation is happening in surat Hud verse 42 in the phrase: "Irkab mma'anâ. ." The letter "ba" has also no indication of vowel. In these situations, do we read the letter with the shadda and not the letter that has no indication of being a vowel? In other words, what are the rules?

2. Are there 2 different ways of  using pause in khalaf reading?

I have notice that when a letter that has a sukoon is followed by a hamza , there is a small pause applied. Once I listened to surat Fâtir, and the sheikh was using the small pause when a lenghtened vowel was followed by a hamza. For example in verse 15 of surat fâtir, when he read "Yâ" (by lenghtening the ya) he paused for a while and then continued to "ayyu han nâsu".

I hope you understand my point inshallah.

Question (12 Rabee' Al-Awwal 1425/May 1, 2004)

Assalamu'alaykum,

I have always wondered, how do we make wasl from the last letter of the huruf muqatta'ah when continuing to the next sentence? Do we have to read with ithhar in all of them?

For example, Kaaf Ha Yaa 'Aieen, Saad dhikru rahmati rabbik..  how do we continue from Saad to dhikru? Do you have a recording to exemplify this case?
JazakAllahu khairan.

Question (11 Rabee' Al-Awwal 1425/Apr. 30, 2004)

Assalamu Aleikum

I have a question regarding the vowel counts during the "mudood".
I understand that the number of counts should be determined by the speed of the reader. However, I still cannot figure out how the counts are made. For example, if a reader has to lengthen to six vowel counts the miim letter "ma" in "as-sama’" (sky) that has a medd sign such as verse 27 in Surat An Nâziat, is it done in this way : sa-ma ma ma ma ma ma (of course in the mind of the reader)? Is that six vowels counts?
May Allah help you find an easy answer inshallah

Question (9 Rabee' Al-Awwal 1425/Apr. 28, 2004)

Assalamu Aleikum

I would like you to help me with this little problem. I usually learn by heart verses and surats from listening to the rhythm and pace of a reciter, usually a slow pace. For instance, if the Qari reads slowly with a rhythm that I know I will be able to remember, I take that rhythm and use it. Alhamdu Lillahi, Allah helped me remember surats and verses up till today. However lately, I have been learning surat Al Insan (chapter 76) by listening to sheikh Mustafa Isma'il on IslamWay and picked up his way of reciting. However, I am having problem remembering when I pray. To be more specific, if I decide to read it, not in the regular prayer, the way he (the sheikh) reads, I have no problem. I do remember it very well. But once I start reading it in the prayer, I sometimes cannot seem to remember as quickly as I could and sometimes go blank. What should I do in order to master correctly this surat ?
P.S. I can read well in Arabic. And the reason I take a reciter's style is because it helped me a lot, and I cannot remember if I learn a surah or verse from my own style.

May Allah help you find an answer inshallah

Question (4 Rabee' Al-Awwal 1425/Apr. 23, 2004)

Assalamu'alaykum,

JazakAllahu khairan for your effort, may Allah reward you greatly.

I understand that meem and noon has intrinsic ghunnah and their ghunnah has to be emphasized when they carry the shaddah.

Sometimes I hear, some qaari bring the ghunnah further in their reading. For example, what is the proper way to read "maa", meem with mad bil alif. Should the ghunnah be only on the meem, or should it continue on the sound of the mad. This happens a lot, especially when noon or meem carries mad jaiz or mad lazim, some people drags the ghunnah of noon or meem together with their mudood. Is this something that is unavoidable or a mistake in tajweed?

Question (3 Rabee' Al-Awwal 1425/Apr. 22, 2004)

Assalam U Alikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu,

Dear brother,

I want to thank you so much for the tireless effort that is your site.  I have benefited greatly from it Al-hamdullilah and will continue to do so, inshaAllah.  May Allah bless you.

Brother, I need some advice.  I want to memorize the Qur'an.  I say this from the heart - I sincerely want to be raised a hafiz inshaAllah on the day or Resurrection.  I have dire passion for memorizing these words (although I am non-Arabic speaking, and at this moment do not know what the meaning of the words are).

What I lack is time-management  with extreme procrastination.  Rest assured, I have a strong passion, in the heart, to memorize this noble Qur'an.  Yet, I find myself just watching time go by each day.  I mean I wake up early in the morning, plan out my day, and before I know it the sun is setting and I have not even come close to my goals.  This happens to me in all facets of life - school work, as well as other things.

Can you please help, or suggest some tips?  Also, please remember me in your dua's, that inshaAllah I may memorize this noble Qur'an, and if within my possibilities, to teach it to others.

JazakAllah brother, looking forward to the reply.

I wanted to know  the rules for stopping after each surah, and what are the different ways of joining the last surah I read to the next one.
I was also wondering  what surah do you have to start saying allahoakbarr. I heard that you have to any this because the prophet did not get revelation for a long time and when he did he was so happy that he said allahoakbar.
