Questions and Answers Rajab 13-27 1422/October 10-15, 2001

Question (27 Rajab 1422/ Oct. 15, 2001)

Would you know of a site where we might find the benefits of the different surah's of the Qur'an described.  I apologize for this question not being a tajweed question as such but I have found your references to different sites so useful I thought perhaps you would know of one on this subject also. Jazakum Allahu khairan.

Question (26 Rajab 1422/ Oct. 13, 2001)

Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah.

Thank you so much for your help in providing useful information on reading the Holy Qur'an.

My questions today are about the signs for stopping in reading:

1) I can guess the meaning of certain signs used (the sad-laam-ya’ might be for "silii"), but I cannot understand other, like the  jiim (optional stop without preference for continuing or stopping) and the qaaf-laam-yaa (optional stop with preference for stopping). Could you please provide the complete meaning of the common signs.

 2) I have heard that stopping at the end of ayaat (in general) is sunnah, or recommended--I not quite sure what it really is. But I have not gotten any reliable reference to this. Is it true, and is it based on hadith?

 3) If question 2 is true, then comes my biggest puzzle: Why are current copies showing signs for links throughout the Book, not only between verses but also between the last verse of a surah and the bismillah (basmalah) of the next surah? The signs suggest continued reading, without any stop.

Thank you again for your help and for the patience in handling our questions, that my look strange to you.

Wassalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah

Question (25 Rajab 1422/ Oct. 12, 2001)

Al-hamdulillah, for your interesting site.  This is my question:  in the following ayah in surah Al Qamar , there is a shaddah on the letter ta’ (  ) - and before there is a daal ( ) with a sukoon.  How should this combination be pronounced?

Question (22 Rajab 1422/ Oct. 9, 2001)

Thank you for answering my previous question on the 10 different ways of recitation below. It was posted on your website on October 3, 2001. I feel little awkward for asking again the question that you have already answered but I am still not clear about the last part of my question. This pertains to the substitution of certain words in Qur'an with different words (but similar meaning) in some ways of qiraa'ah(?). Is there any validity to this? If yes, what are these interchangeable words in Qur'an according to some qiraa'ah?  My apologies to be an annoyance. May Allah reward you for teaching us, and for your patience.

Question (22 Rajab 1422/ Oct. 9, 2001)

To begin with may Allah reward you for your answers to our questions.  I have read about the different ways of reading in your Q&As; is the Qur'an written in different ways also?  Or are the different readings only in the way it is read and in the written form it is always the same?

Question (18 Rajab 1422/ Oct. 5, 2001)

In the beginning of surah An-Naba' the first word is ; by the translation it would seem that it is a combination of the word   and the word   .  Is that right and if it is why would the alif at the end be dropped?

Question (16 Rajab 1422/ Oct. 3, 2001)

I have heard that there are probably as many as ten different (tajweed) systems that can be used to recite the Qur'an. I have also heard that in some systems in tajweed, some of the words used in Qur'an are replaced with different but similar meaning words. Please verify the validity of this, and if it is true, how is it justified to change the words of Qur'an? May Allah reward you for teaching us.
