Question

Assalaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah,

May Allah reward you for such a wonderful website.  This really fills a need.  I apologize, because I know I'm going to swamp you with questions in this e-mail.  There is no local teacher.

I am working learning Warsh, and my question is about the .  In the following link: http://www.abouttajweed.com/warsh_rules_2.htm, you state for the example "A" in Qur'an 7:111 and 26:36  , that the madd is 2 harakahs.  Although my goal is to read from my "plain" mushaf, I picked up a "tajweedee" mushaf because I thought it would help me understand the rules.  The tajweedee one marks it has having a necessary 6 harakahs.  Is there are a difference on this?  And if there is, do some give it the option of 2, 4 or 6 harakahs?

Also, you stated that otherwise, the rules are as the rules of Hafs.  I don't know the rules of Hafs.  :)   Does the normal "ha" get only 2, or is it an optional 2,4, or 6?

Similar for B:  is the madd as-silah just 2, or is it 2, 4, or 6 optional?

Jazakum Allahu khayr.  Barak Ullahu feekum.

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

Jazakum Allahu khairan and may Allah grant that the site is beneficial to many Muslims.   The questions are not excessive, may Allah reward you.

There is no hamzah or sukoon after the  in the phrase , so there is no reason for a longer medd.  The medd is only two vowel counts then and there is no difference of opinion on this.

What we think the tajweed mushaf you have was referring to was the word previous to these two words, .  In this case there is a medd letter (the ) at the end of a word and the first letter of the next word is a hamzah,  , we have , and Warsh lengthens this six vowel counts.  Hafs on the other hand, lengthens it four or five vowel counts.

The only time the vowel on the  gets lengthened for both Warsh and Hafs is when there is , outside of a few special words.  To review the conditions for , please see http://www.abouttajweed.com/al-mudood_part_3.htm  .  This link is for the rules of Hafs, but the conditions are the same for Warsh for  , the exception for  in the aayah  69 of surah al-Furqan at the bottom of this link is not the same for Warsh.

Hafs and Warsh (and all of the different qira’aat) lengthen  two vowel counts.  When there is a hamzah following the  which fulfils the conditions for ,  Warsh then lengthens it six vowel counts.  Hafs on the other had lengthens it four or five vowel counts.  This longer lengthening is called , you can read about it from the lessons on Hafs at: http://www.abouttajweed.com/al-mudood_part_6_medd_waajib_jaa'iz.htm.  You need to scroll down on the above link to reach the explanation of
