Question

You mentioned in the tidbit lesson that the letter  has sticking as well as heaviness present when pronouncing it; could you explain more about this sticking?  I understand that it is also present in  and , , is it the same for each letter?

Answer

The characteristic of sticking of most of the tongue to the roof of the mouth is present in the four letters mentioned in the question, and there are no other letters besides these four that have this characteristic.  These four letters are all also part of the larger group of tafkheem letters .  The part of the tongue that sticks to the roof of the mouth is not the same for all these letters.  For   and  the entire tongue sticks to the roof of the mouth while pronouncing the with its articulation point included in the sticking.  In case of the  and , the sticking is done with the posterior portion of the tongue, again to the roof of the mouth, but the soft palate only, and the articulation is done by the tip of the tongue.
