Question
Assalamu alaikum In Sura Yaaseen, ayat 52, there is saktah, waqfi lazim, waqfi gufran, and waqfi monzil all at the same place. Do I obey the rule of saktah or the rule of waqf? Answer Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. There is a sakt (breathless pause) for Hafs after in the aayah, but this is only when continuing. The stop there (waqf) is in the (sufficient) category, so is preferred to stop, but when a student is practicing or learning to read the complete Qur'an, the teacher will have the student read in continuum to practice the sakt. The early scholars of tajweed did not have categories of waqf called gufran and monzil. There are four categories of stopping laid out by the early scholars, they are (complete), (sufficient), (good), and (repulsive).
