Question
assalamu alaikum,
In surah fatiha. When we say ihdinasiratul mustaqeem. The nun in ihdina has a long vowel followed by a shadda in the saad ( in the word siratul). Are we supposed recite the nun as two counts because of the long vowel? or because theres a shadda after it do we just recite one count?
Also in surah ikhlas, in the last ayat there is a waw with an alif. So do we recite two counts like kufu waaan or kufu wann?

Answer
Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh
When there is a medd letter followed by a sukoon, as is the case in a shaddah because the shaddah consists of a sukoon and a vowel, the medd letter is dropped when continuing.  The only time we would give the alif in  ihdinaa in aayah 6 of al Faatihah two vowel counts is when stopping on it.  Please see the following link for the rules of two saakin letters meeting.
