Question
Assalamu Alakyum,
I am confused about Ikhfa and the ghunnah. What part of my tongue should go next to the articulation point of the next letter? Is it the tip, the back? Jazakallahu Khairan
Answer
Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh
When we are making ikhfa' of the noon saakinah, our tongue gets close to the next letter.  This means the part of the tongue which produces the next letter is the part we move close to the next letter.  So if the next letter is a قاف  or كاف  we position the posterior portion of our tongue at the articulation point of these letters.  If the next letter is a sheen or jeem, we position the middle part of the tongue close to the articulation point  which is the upper palate.  If the next letter is تاء  or سين or an other letter which causes ikhfa' and uses the tip of the tongue, we position the tip of our tongue close to but without touching the articulation point of the next letter. These are examples, but you can extrapolate the theory to the other letters of ikhfa.  In summary, we get our mouth ready to pronounce the next letter during the ikhfa'.
Wa iyyakum.
