Question
How do you join `alif laam meeem` with the word allah in `allahu laa ilaaha illa` of surah al Imran verse 1 and 2 when doing wasl.

Do you say `alif laam meem allahulaa` or alif laam meemallahu.

Also when doing wasl can you shorten the madd on meem to 2 harakah when joining with verse 2

Answer

The beginning of surah آل عمران has a special occurrence which needs to be learned by students of the Qur’an.

When joining the first two aayaat together in one breath, there are two saakin letters meeting: the ميم ساكنة of the separate letter ميم and the لام saakinah of the Glorious name of Allah. The ميم then will acquire a فتحة when joining the two aayaat together in one breath.  We can then lengthen the مد لازم حرفي of the letter ميم either six vowel counts, as it was originally a fixed sukoon, or two vowel counts, considering that it now has a vowel (فتحة) on it.
