Question
When reciting alhamdolillah in fatiha, is the correct way to recite the (hamdo) like o in got or oo in soon. When I have listened to qaris, some recite it like o in got when other like oo in soon. In the same way, with it is wow with a kasrah, do we recite is as wa like an a in wagon or like a in father. Could you please clarify?

Answer
We caution about comparing the Arabic sounds to English, as they often do not match 100% and it can lead to incorrect pronunciation.  The dhammah is the same sound as the Arabic medd letter " wow", but shorter.  Although we really hesitate to compare it to English, just to help you out a bit, it is closer to the oo sound in "soon".  There are many different dialects and accents in English, so one place in the world may pronounce the oo in "soon" differently than another.  The two lips should be circled and a tightness felt in the cheeks when pronouncing the correct dhammah.
A wow with a kasrah is pronounced with the two lips circled and then the jaw is retracted for the kasrah sound, again we are hesitant to compare it to English, but it is somewhat similar to "we".
