How does one go about eliminating sound coming out from the nose when reciting Qur'aan (in other than the required places) ? In particular madd of wow saakinah wa madmoom maa qablahaa Jazakallahu khair Wassalamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh Answer Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, This is a not so uncommon problem but it takes practice to eliminate it. What is needed is focusing the sound out the mouth and not up the nose. To do this make sure there is a small separation between the two lips as well as protrusion when pronouncing the saakinah which is preceded by a dhammah; this separation should not be too large. This will allow the flow of sound to go out the mouth. Next picture the sound flowing out your mouth at the same time as pronouncing the . Another exercise which helps the reciter to distinguish between the correct and incorrect sound and feeling inside the nasal passage and mouth is pronouncing a long and during this elongated sound, alternate between focusing the sound up to the nose (on purpose) then out the mouth. This will help in the focusing the sound properly as well as the sensation of the correct and incorrect sound. To test yourself as to the clarity of the , or any other letter which should not have a ghunnah, close off the nostrils when saying the letter, and if the sound impedes, then there is a ghunnah.
