Question
Assalamualaykum wa rahmatullahe wa barakatuhu

I teach some children tajweed in a local Qur’aan School and had a question pertaining to the method of teaching the children reading. Please note that most of the students are beginners and non- Arabs who do not have much exposure to the Qur’aan outside of the class.

There are two methods currently being practiced in the other classes. One in which the teacher goes around the class, listening to each student read a few lines in a turn-taking manner, which usually starts from Surahthul Baqarah and continues through the Qur’aan.

The other method consists of the teacher reading, the students repeating and then having a specific part which they have to practice for a while before reading it to the teacher. In this method the teacher has selected some of the suwar in the Qur’aan which have short aayaath in order to facilitate the confident application of the tajweed rules and to develop their reading fluency as they are beginners.

Which method do you think is most effective in developing the recitation of the students?

Your thoughts/advice will be appreciated
JazakAllahuKhair

Answer

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh
If they are beginners and not well exposed to the Qur'an, the students need to be introduced to the shorter surahs of the Qur'an and memorize them for their prayers, before moving on to reading the Qur'an in progression.  It may be time consuming, but the best way to go about it is for the teacher to read the portion or surah they are to memorize that day or week, then listen to each student read it and correct them, and then they work on it at home and have it ready for the teacher to listen to them the next class time.  It is quite important that the teacher listen to them individually before they memorize because there may be major mistakes which need to be pointed out to them.
It is best that whatever their curriculum that the teacher set a smaller portion and listen to them all read that portion individually so the teacher can be sure they are reading accurately.  It is not a good idea to listen to different students read different portions if they are not proficient; the students will not have read a large amount the Qur'an under supervision of the teacher and may have many mistakes not discovered since the teacher did not listen to them read that part.
It is always better to have the students master a section and read it correctly and fluently than to read a large amount incorrectly with major mistakes.
