What is haroof ul qamar and what is haroof shamas

Answer

Assalaam alaikum. The  saakinah of the Arabic definite article  , which is like the English word “the”, is sometimes pronounced clearly and other times is not pronounced because it merges into the next letter.  The letters that follow the  saakinah of  are what determines whether the  is pronounced clearly (huroof al-qamariyyah) or if it is merged into the following letter (huroof ash-shamsiyyah).  Please click  here for more detailed information and the naming of the letters of each group.
