Question

Assalamu Aleikum

I have noticed that among the 28 letters of the Arabic alphabet, two never carry the shadda: The alif and the hamzah. Is there a specific rule that suggest that those two letters not carry the shadda? Would you please tell us why
is it so?

Ma salam

Answer

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh,

The alif is always saakinah preceded by a fat-hah, so cannot acquire a shaddah since the shaddah involves a vowel plus a sukoon.

The hamzah can acquire a shaddah and does in the Arabic language, but it is quite heavy in pronunciation and there is no occurrence of the hamzah with a shaddah in the Glorious Qur’an.
