Question

Salem alaykoum wa rahtou Allahou

I have two questions:

1. For a person who finished learning the Coran, how much you advise him to review it in order to have a good knowledge of it (for example: one hizb a day during one year, one chapter…)?

2. How much time is needed by a person who has learned the Coran with Hafs rules to learn Warsh?

Baraka Allaou fi koum

Answer

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh.

1.  When one finishes memorizing the Qur’an there should be a period of time, not less than six months in which there is intensive review-between three to five ajzaa’ a day, with five being the most preferred amount. After this period, the review schedule should be no less than one juz’ per day and preferably more.  This review of one juz’ a day minimum should be for life, insha’ Allah, and in this way the whole Qur’an is reviewed every month.

2.  This depends on the student.  It can be done quite quickly as far as learning the rules in their text form, but practicing with a teacher will take longer.  It could be done in  a few weeks time, if there are daily sessions with the teacher and corrections made.  We are not referring to an ijaazah though, just learning the rules by theory and practicing applying them.  There are special words pronounced differently in the recitation of Warsh throughout the Qur’an, and this would require a teacher listening to all of them, or at least the student being aware of all of them and understanding how they should be read.
