Question

Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatu Allah

If we are studying how to read The Noble Qur'an with tajweed by way of Hafs 'an 'Aasim do you think it's ok to listen also to the recitation of Sheikh Khaleel al Husaree for example, by way of Warsh.  Do you think that this could interfere with someone's learning?

May Allah reward you for your kindness and help.

Answer

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh.

It is a wonderful idea to listen to the reading of Warsh.  Listening to the other qira'aat also show us the vast miracles of the Qur'an and its deep beauty.  The student then can set their goals high to learn the different qira'aat after memorizing the Qur'an by the way of Hafs 'an 'Aasim.

We do recommend that the student listening to Warsh to have studied the basic tajweed rules of Hafs and studied the characteristics of the letters and tafkheem and tarqeeq before listening to the reading of Warsh.  The reason for this is that Warsh has different rules for tafkheem and tarqeeq of the  and  than Hafs.  The mudood (lengthenings) are also different for Warsh, so a good grasp of the rules and their application is highly recommended so that one does not mix up the two ways of recitation.  The most important point to remember is that we can not listen to the reading of Warsh and the pick some words read in the way of Warsh and try to put them in to our recitation of Hafs.  Each way is its own complete way transmitted from the Messenger  to us by authentic chains of transmission.  We can not arbitrarily read one way for a few words then another for another few words.

May Allah make easy for you the learning of the different ways of recitation and reward you and all Muslims with goodness.
