Question

May Allah reward you for your clear and informative answers.  I have a question today about a word in surah:  Al-A'raaf aayah 196

It is about the 2nd word; could you please explain what are the letters and their sequence - on what letter is the second kasrah?  Thank you.

Answer

May Allah reward you for your useful questions, and you are welcome.

There are two  in the second word of this aayah.  This first, is written as a small letter , represented by the small angle like symbol under the shaddah.  This  has a shaddah with a kasrah on it.  The second  is written as we normally see it, with a fat-h on it.  Since there is a shaddah on the first small , and it is preceded by a kasrah, we raise our voices slightly on the kasrah on the  to make sure we hit the first  of the shaddah with collision ( ) and not with an unintentional lengthening.  This is called a , which means accent.  We let the sound run on the first saakin of the shaddah because of the characteristic of running of the sound ( ) that is inherent in the letter .  The second  of the shaddah is read with a kasrah.  The normally written  after the small  has a fat-h on it.  In all there are three pronounced letter  next to each other in this word; the first saakinah, the second with a kasrah, the third with a fat-h.

There are many times this small  is found in the Qur’an.  If there is a small or greater connective lengthening from a kasrah on a pronoun/possessive pronoun , there will be a similar small , such as in the third word of:

Similarly, there are places just like the aayah you referred to that have two  next to each other, and one is written as a small .  An example of this is: .
