I had seen the phrase “weak letters” for “huroof al-‘eillah,” referring to the letters alif, wow, and ya’, and I commonly use that phrase. What do you think of that phrase?

First of all, we would like to give our apologies for missing the second part of your question in the recent post on your query about medd letters.  The letters alif, , and , in any of their states, voweled, saakinah leeniyyah, or saakinah meddiyyah, are indeed  and you are correct in its usage.  The group of  as stated above covers the three letters in any of its states while the medd letter group is more specific; the three letters must be saakinah and preceded by either a fat-h (as in the case of an alif) or a kasrah (in the case of a ) or a dhammah (in the case of a ).
