Question

Asalam alikom

What is the defining characteristic of Warsh reading?

May Allah reward you inshallah. Ma’ Salam

Answer

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh.

There is much of the Warsh way of recitation that is unique, and it would be difficult to put one single defining characteristic.  The special rules of tarqeeq of the letter  and the  of the , are not present in other recitations.  Warsh also has two ways of reciting the words that Hamzah and Al-Kisaa’ee read with imaalah, one of the ways being with , which less of an imaalah that the full imaalah.  Warsh also reads both  and  with six vowel counts. The recitation of Warsh has three possible lengths for , two, four or six vowel counts.

These are just a few characteristics of the recitation of Warsh, there are more, of course. We ask Allah to make it possible for us to lay out the complete set of rules for the recitation of Warsh soon.

May Allah reward you too.  Wa assalaam alaikum wa rahmatu Allah.
