Question

Assalam-u-alaikum,
Some one has told me that it is mandatory to cover the Qur'an with a fabric cover. This implies more respect for the Book of Allah. In my opinion this is absurd. The real way of showing respect is to read, understand, and follow it as often as one can. Beautifying and decorating the Qur'an does not cut it. Please verify this for me. Thank you and may Allah reward you for teaching us.

Answer

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuhu.

There are several issues to be addressed here.  First, this is a question regarding a  ruling and we cannot answer fiqh questions on this site, for that is not our area of expertise.  Second, the person who told you this needs to provide proof from the Qur’an, the sunnah of our beloved Prophet , or a sound scholarly opinion from a known and respected scholar that has the right to give rulings, that this cover is required.  They may have this proof or they may not.  They must provide proof though if they are going to make claims that it is required.  Third and most important, we should not let issues like this divide us.  There are some that have special covers on the copy of the Qur’an that are loose and separated from the actual mus-haf so they can carry it when they are not in the state of wudhu’.  We are not addressing this issue because it is a fiqh issue and there are varied opinions on this matter, but just stating what could be the reason for this claim, so you understand the possibilities.  Ask for proof, and if proof is given, study the different opinions, make a decision based on firm knowledge and sound scholarly rulings, and respect those who follow a different ruling based on firm knowledge and sound scholarly rulings.

You are welcome and may Allah reward you also and all the Muslims
