Question

Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu

I am sorry to have to ask you more questions on wuquuf, but there are some areas that still remain unclear to me.

1. In Masad verse 1 if we have to stop (teaching or compelled) on yadaa, is this aarid sukuun (ie 2, 4 or 6 counts allowed) or is there only 2 counts allowed? What about on the words 'mimma' and 'alaa'  for example in Baqarah verses 3 and 5 respectively  - is this aarid sukun for 2, 4 or 6 counts or 2 only?

 2. How do we stop on the word (the sky)? You say that we can stop with 4 or 5 counts (wajib muttasil) or with 6 counts (aarid sukuun). My question is that as the wajib muttasil is a stronger madd than aarid sukun shouldn't only 4 or 5 counts be allowed and not 6?  If 6 is allowed then is the rule that the weaker madd (aarid sukun) can equal or be longer than the stronger madd (wajib muttasil) but not shorter than it?

 3. My final question is regarding stopping on the 'standing oblong zero' (sifr mustateel qaa'im). For example in the word ana ('I') or aTH-THunoona (33:10). If we stop here is this aarid sukuun (ie are 2, 4 or 6 counts allowed) or are there only 2 counts allowed? If so why?

Jazakallahu khayr for taking the time to answer my questions.

wa salaam

Answer

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh.

Do not worry about asking more questions, that is what this section of the site is for, and if something is not clear even after an answer, ask again.  We don't mind at all.

1.      The definition of is it occurs when there is a medd letter followed by one voweled letter with any of the three possible vowels, in the same word and we stop on this letter with a presented sukoon.  In the examples in the question:    and   we have in all three cases a medd letter at the end of a word with no letter following it.  The conditions of  have not been met, since there is no letter at all following the medd letter.  These then would all be natural lengthenings ( ) of two vowel counts.

2.      Masha' Allah, you have answered the question correctly.  Yes,  is weaker than the , so the two counts of  2, 4, 6 of  is not allowed when there are two reasons for the same medd, but the other two allowed vowel counts are allowed, equal or greater than .

3.        is the symbol (0) written on the last alif of certain words (seven different words) indicating that we stop on the words with the alif established, but if we join this word with the word that comes next, we drop the alif, such as in:  and  .  The situation is then the same as the first question and answer, there is no letter after the medd letter, so there cannot be , which by definition requires one voweled letter after the medd letter.  We stop on these words then with two vowel counts, the measure of  .

Wa iyyakum.  Wa assalaam alaikum wa rahmatu Allah.
