Could you please recommend a few books on tajweed (English version) that I can purchase locally (USA - Chicago area), or through mail order. Also if possible, please list the names of the stores or organizations where your recommended books can be purchased. Thank you for your help.

There are probably more books in tajweed than two in English, but there are only two that we have reviewed and can therefore recommend.  They most likely will have to be purchased online, since they are published in Saudi Arabia.  The first book, A Brief Introduction to Tajweed, by Umm Mohammed, is for beginners and is as the title implies, brief.  The second book would be for students of tajweed and has more details; Tajweed Rules of the Qu’ran (part one), by K. Czerepinski.  Both of these books are available through www.messageoflight.com in England.  The first book is available in many online stores including http://store.yahoo.com/islamicbookstore-com/index.html. The closest to you for the second book would most likely be an online store in Toronto, Canada, www.al-attique.com, it isn’t listed, but is sold through them.
