Question

As'salaamu Alaikum.  I live in Augusta Georgia and there aren’t that many Islamic centers where I’m at so insha’ Allah you can help me learn how to pronounce the quranic letters and the vowel sounds insha’ Allah.

Answer

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

There are a few links that we will post below that should help you.  The first is the entire Arabic alphabet  in a flash program and when you place the cursor over a letter, you will hear the sound of that letter.

The second link also has sounds, but it is slow to load.  Start with the first lesson link on the right hand side and then go through the lessons one by one.  It has many further lessons for you to test yourself on the letters, and then more on how the letters look when connected, etc.  Once this second link loads, it is quite a good tool to learn and self test. The lessons include the vowels, their sounds, and drills.   This link should be very useful to you.

The last two links describe without sound files, the vowels and how they are formed.  There are only three vowels in Arabic, so once you understand the sounds they make, it should be easy.  Vowels are not written in the words, but instead are written as symbols over letters.

In the meantime, we pray that you will find a good teacher in your area, to help you learn more how to read the Glorious Qur’an.
