Question

assalaamualaikum,
what is tariq at-tayyiba?  and what does it mean when a person has an ijaza in this?
jazakallahu khaira
wassalaamualaikum

Answer

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

Imam Ibn Al-Jazaree documented laid out the rules for all the authentic ways of reading the ten qira’aat in his work: An-Nashr fi-l-qira’aat al-‘ashr, and as was done by the early scholars, he made it easier to understand and learn in poem form in his pose: Tayyibatu-n-nashr fi-l-qira’aat al-‘ashr. These different authentic ways then became known as Tareeq at-Tayyibah.  There are many different ways for each of the ten qir’aat.

If one gets an ijaazah in all the ways documented for one qira’ah in tareeq at-tayyibah, he/she will then have an ijaazah in the qira’ah min tareeq at-tayyibah.  So if one has an ijaazah in Hafs ‘an ‘Aasim min tareeq at-tayyibah, it means they have read the whole complete Qur’an by memory to their sheikh/sheikhah in all the ways of Hafs ‘an ‘Aasim documented by Imam Al-Jazaree in An-Nashr.

If one gets an ijaazah in all of the ten qira’aat with all the ways documented by Imam Al-Jazaree then he/she has an ijaazah in the ten qir’aat min tareeq at-tayyibah.  This is indeed a great achievement and few are those that have succeeded in obtaining this ijaazah in this day and age.

May Allah increase us all in knowledge and grant us this great achievement.

Wa iyyaakum

Wa assalaam alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
