Question

Assalamualaikum wa rahmat Allahi wa barakatuh,

First I thank you for having this wonderful site, May Allah reward all of us, insha' Allah.

I always join my friends in tajweed class and sometimes was asked by my teacher to help her teaching others.

my question is, we have few elder sisters who want to learn but it is hard for them because of their age. What do you recommend? Is it enough to practice reading only w/out teaching the hukums in detail?

Jazakumullah khair for the efforts.

 Answer

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh.

Jazakum Allahu khairan for your comments.

A little advise from experience, don’t underestimate the abilities of the elders.  We have seen them surpass the young more than once.  There are some though, young and old, that just have a great difficulty trying to read the Qur’an, let alone applying the rules.  Making mistakes in the articulation point of the letters, extending vowels, or cutting off medd letters are major mistakes and are categorized as sinful mistakes.  These mistakes must be worked on at all costs.  If these mistakes are a major hurdle, then there is nothing wrong with putting aside the more finite rules (ahkaam) until they smooth out their reading.  The basic  saakinah,  saakinah, and  saakinah rules can be taught and corrected in their recitation after this, followed by the medd rules.  If they accomplish this, then the sifaat, tafkheem and tarqeeq can be taught and corrected in their reading.

May Allah reward you also and make it easy for you.
