I was reading surah Al-MULK . why does MIN have a shadda in Ayat 16. What is the
extra MEEM for? I see this situation all over the QURAN ayat 22 23 26 I can go
on and on. What is the extra meem For?
As Salam alikum

Answer

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh.

You are referring to the merging of the non-voweled meem into the meem that begins the next following word in aayah 16: .  The definition of idghaam, or merging is: The meeting of a non-voweled letter with a voweled letter so that the two letters become one emphasized letter of the second type. The word “emphasized” is the translation of mushaddadah, or one having a shaddah.

There is no “extra” meem, the first meem has merged into the second, and the second has acquired a shaddah because of this.

In aayah 22, 23, and 26 there is also a merging taking place, but this time it is a noon saakinah (which includes the tanween) merging into a voweled meem, as in: and    .
