Question

Assalamu Aleikum

I have a question regarding Muslim students who have memorized the entire
Qur’an:
Are the students introduced to an audience and then congratulated? Is there
any ceremony organized? Do they (the students) have to recite the entire book
by stage in front of qualified professors of the Qur’an?
May Allah help you inshallah.
Wa salamu alaikum

Answer

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh.

This would vary vastly from one Qur’an school to another, even within the same city in a Muslim country you would find a great variation on how the memorizer is honored.  Some places have elaborate parties to encourage others to take the same path and to do some fundraising at the same time.  Other schools do not even have a ceremony and sometimes the students themselves may decline to attend.  A bigger party or ceremony would be most needed in non-Muslim countries where Muslims are in the minority and Huffaath are in short supply.  That does not mean though that there should be no ceremony in a Muslim country.  The type of ceremony depends on the circumstances and desires of the schools and students. One has to weigh the advantages of a ceremony over the disadvantages and decide which has the greatest benefit for the majority of the Muslims, and especially what is best for the graduating students in maintaining their purity of intention.

Usually, and again, there is no uniformity in this, the student who has finished memorizing the Qur’an is given an exam on the whole entire Qur’an wherein they pick 5-8 cards and each card has written on it a page to be recited.  The student must recite each page of the 5-8 on the test and is tested therein on their memory and applied tajweed.  The pages are not in order and often are the more difficult areas for memory, such as aayaat that are similar in wording to other aayaat. This does not usually take place on a stage, but in front of a qualified committee.

May Allah make us all of those that memorize the Qur’an and apply it to our lives.  Ameen.
