Question

Salam alaikom

I am just starting tajweed at the Muslim community center, is there any audio video help available so that I am my children can practice at home, because class is only once a week.

Answer

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh.

There are many audio cassettes available that are done by reciters that have mastered tajweed, and some are aimed at beginning students and children.

Some shuyookh have sets that are labeled as "mu'allim" or teacher, others read very slowly.  Either of these kinds of sets will be good for you and your children to use.  There is in the mua'llim a gap after each aayah for you to repeat the aayah.  The following links have some sets for sale, but we must note that we are not associated with these online stores.

http://islamicbookstore.com/a3676.html  juz’ ‘amma (juz’ 30).

http://www.noorart.com/product182.html juz’30 , each aayah is repeated with children reading.

You may also download the surah you are working on from some of the Islamic sites that have the Qur’an for download, such as:

and for children:

As to a video, we searched and found one that had a preview on it, and although the recitation was good, the quality of the picture was not good.  The aayaat in Arabic were small and the aayaat were also written in transliteration, something we do not recommend at all.  We were not able to preview other videos, so cannot give any recommendations and suggest you find a good audio cassette set to work with.

Another good online resource is www.reciter.org which allows you to listen to a particular aayah up to seven times, and you have a choice of reciters to listen to.
