Question

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh,

I have a question that is not related to tajweed but is more related to the manners of reading the Qur'an.

There is a common practice in some places that a group of people will divide 30 juz' among themselves to be read (esp. in Ramadhan). When everybody finished, they will gather and read together from surah AdDhuha till the end which they call it majlis khitm AlQuran. Is this allowed? I've tried to ask from the other websites but resulted in waiting lists.

 JazakumuLlah in advance.

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh.

A khatm, or completion of the Qur’an is when an individual reads the complete Qur’an from al-faatihah to an-naas.  It is shown in an authentic chain that Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, gathered his family together for the dua’ when he would complete the Qur’an.  The difference here between what is established as acceptable and what this group is doing is big.  There is no one person reading, or for that matter listening to, the complete Qur’an.  Individuals are reading portions of the Qur’an at the same time, but not completing the whole Qur'an.
