Question

Assalamu alaikum.

Please advise me as to what is a good method to start with when getting a child of about 7 to memorise the whole Qur'an assuming that he can read the Qur'an...how much should they memorise daily? What are some good systems of revising what one has memorised? Is it better for a child to memorise through reading or through hearing the aayat he is to memorise?

Any other general advice about trying to fit memorisation in as well as schooling would be very useful and appreciated.

Jazakumullahu Khairun!

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatu Allahi wabarakatuh.

There are different programs used in different schools.  For those keen on completing the memorization before they enter high school the following program is used in many Qur'an schools in Saudi Arabia: The goal for the age of 7 would be a juz’ (generally speaking) in a year, then two ajzaa’ the next year, then increasing to four after that, and finally five ajzaa’ a year at the age of ten.  At this rate at the end of the year when the child is ten, he/she will have memorized 12 juz’.  Memorizing five ajzaa’ a year after this would lead to the completion of memorization at the age of 14.

Children usually use both reading and hearing for memorization, but in the earlier years rely more on hearing and as they mature, rely more on reading.

It is extremely important to have a constant revision program while memorizing new portions of the Qur’an.  Tests on revision can be given on the weekends.

Memorizing the Qur’an has blessings in it and many children or teens that attend Qur’an classes find themselves doing better at school than their friends who do not.  This is not an exclusive occurrence, but very common.  If you keep the Qur’an memorization first before any homework and studies in the regular school, it captures the child’s mind when he/she is fresh and impresses upon him/her the importance of the Qur’an.

May Allah help the Muslim children memorize and apply the Qur’an, and make them of the rightly guided.  Ameen
