Question

Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatu Allah,

Could you please clarify this passage in your current "Tidbit" lesson:

"All beginnings after or  are allowed, but beginnings after cutting off ( ) should only be after a .  Beginning after a   is allowed only if the beginning is the start of an aayah and  can only be after a stop, never after "

It is the part that I've underlined that isn't clear to me; I understood that to begin after cutting off the reading entirely i.e.  , the reader begins after a "complete stop" () so that the reader starts at the beginning of a new subject.  My question is what is meant when it then says that can only be after a stop, never after " Jazakumu Allahu khair.

Answer

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh,

What is meant is that  after a can only be after a stop with a breath, never after  cutting off the recitation completely ().  Maybe if the sentence were re-written as the following, it would be more clear:

Beginning after a   is allowed only if the beginning is the start of an aayah and this start () can only be after a stop with the intention of continuing reading, never after  cutting off () of the recitation completely ."

Insha' Allah this makes things clear.  Wa iyyakum wa-l-muslimeen.
