Question

Assalamu Aleikum

a) What does it mean when a reciter (Qari) uses or knows maqaam (or maqamaat)in the recitation?
b) Sometimes in surat nâzi'at verse 27 , some qaris recite as: "A antumuu...". Since this way of reciting verse 27 is neither Hafs or Warsh, would you please tell me which way it is?
May Allah reward you inshallah and give you Hikmah

Answer

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh,

a) There is nothing in the study of tajweed or in the recitation of the Qur’an nor in the authentic chains of transmission using a maqaam in recitation.  This is an Arabic term used for music and there should be no use of music in reciting the Qur’an.

b) Most likely it is either the recitation of Qaloon , Ibn Katheer, or Abu Ja’far.  In all three there will be of the second hamzah . If there is an alif inserted after the first hamzah then it is the recitation of either Qaloon or Abu Ja’far.  If there is no alif inserted between the two hamzahs, then it is the recitation of Ibn Katheer.  Warsh also makes  of the second alif, in one of two allowed ways to read this, plus he does have  of six vowel counts here, since it is followed by a hamzah.  If you are hearing the six count lengthening of a dhammah on the meem, then it is the recitation of Warsh.

Wa iyyaakum.

Wa assalaam alaikum wa rahmatu Allah.
