Question

Salam aliekum wa rahamatuallah dear brother in Islam. May take this opportunity to wish you ramadan karim and may Allah reward you for this wonderful site inshallah.

My question is simple really; is there a limit to how much Qur’an can be read? it would just settle a family dispute, whereby some members of the family take to reading the Qur’an many, many times, esp. during Ramadan ....over 5 or 6 possibly double that number. Isn’t that too many?

The basis for me is that I thought that I read a hadith in which the Prophet (saw) instructed one not to read the whole Qur’an in less than a week. The reasoning I thought was if it was read in any less time, one would be reading it too fast to be able to ponder over the verses. Is this totally wrong?

I apologize if I am repeating a similar question and jazakahallah kheir for your anticipated wisdom.

salam aliekum

Answer

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh.  May Allah grant you a blessed Ramadhaan too.

There was a similar question asked, but it is not identical, and since this is the month of the Qur'an, many can benefit from your question, jazakum Allahu khairan.
The Messenger of Allah, ,said: “Who read the Qur'an in less than three [days], did not understand.”  Related by Abee Dawood and graded saheeh by Albani.  The reference for the older question is: http://www.abouttajweed.com/220103.htm .  If one completes the Qur’an then in three days, he/she would be able to read the Qur’an ten complete times during Ramadhaan, if there were 30 days of Ramadhaan that year.

We found a very nice article explaining the hadeeth and the recitation of the Qur’an during Ramadhaan further, it can be found at the following link:

You will see from the article that Ramadhaan is special. May Allah increase us in righteous deeds in this blessed month.

Wa iyyakum,

Assalaam alaikum wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh.
