Question

As-salam 'alaykum warahmatullah,
How long do you anticipate will take a student of tajweed who has successfully learnt and applied all the basic rules with a local teacher to obtain an Ijaza with a teacher with a very strong chain in tajweed.
Jazakumullahu khayran

 Answer

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakaatuh.

The time it takes to obtain an ijaazah varies from one student to another, with many factors coming entering into the equation.  One factor is the time the sheikh has available to give the student, another factor is the ability of the student to apply the tajweed rules completely and consistently.  The level of mastery of the memorization is a third factor.  As you can see, it is not possible to give a time factor straight off.  Some have obtained an ijaazah in one or two weeks; this was with students with excellent application of the tajweed rules, excellent mastery of the memorization, and the ability to read a great amount each day without sacrificing in the quality of tajweed.  Others, and this is more of the norm, take months; still others take years.  It would be a good idea to contact the intended sheikh by phone, read to them on the phone, and then make arrangements depending on the analysis of your recitation.
