Question

Assalamualaykum

I was reading surah Ghafir verse 58  and on the word 'wa lal musee'  there is a waqf jaiz on the yaa and the ibtidaa seems to be from the hamzah. This doesn't make sense as the waqf is in the middle of a word.
Could you please explain this.

Jaza kallahu khayraa

Answer

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh.

The waqf (stop) is on the last letter of the word, in this case a hamzah.  You are very right, it is not allowed to stop in the middle of a word, and the marks for stopping that were added later by scholars in small letters above the actual Qur'an script were made with the assumption that this rule applied.  There are places where the letters are close together and the added small marks indicating stop rules sometimes do not fit in the area properly.  Another example of the same situation is the stop on the word:  in the aayah:

The actual mark for stopping in on the , but since the rule in Arabic is that we can only stop on the end of a word, never in the middle, we then know that the stop is actually for stopping on the end of the word on the letter with a shaddah .
